Many years ago I made a sewing machine cover for my darling vintage singer using these little spool blocks. The time has come to make a new one as this one is certainly "well loved" over the years.
Very easy to make and I just use leftover scraps of assorted dark/med and light prints from my basket,
For each block you need 2) 1" x 3 1/4" retangles
2) 1" x 2" retangles
1) 2" x 2" square
4) 1" squares
Sew the 1" x 2" retangles to either side of the 2"x 2" square, press toward the center
then take the 1" squares and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner and place them on either end of the 1" x 3 1/4" retangle, You will sew on that line you drew but be careful of your placement here, On the left side you want to be sewing from lower left to top right and on the right side lower right to top left, ( hopefully I didn't say that wrong !)
Repeat for the other 1" x 3 1/4" retangle exactly the same way.
Press out and trim the extra off
and stitch to the top of the previous unit you just made and do the same thing on the bottom of the unit, and there you have a spool ! Fun to make , next week I will show how to these by hand with a different technique and that is totally portable and wee bit smaller in size !
Always, Quilting,
Teresa
